Real Fitness
What is REAL fitness?? I believe many different people will have many different explanations for it.
When I was in a retreat in USA, I felt weird when I did not have the opportunity to do my usual running, endurance, and strength training routine. After all, I’ve been doing running, endurance and strength all my varsity life and have been doing it for almost 8 full years while dragonboating.
I had a rare chance of running out of my retreat grounds and went for a slow long run round the mountains.
When I returned to where I stayed, I spotted my master relaxing on a reclining chair outside of his house. Smiling, my master asked me if I had been very active in sports and I said yes! I asked my master if he had been very active in sports, as even though he was looking pretty healthy, he was a bit plump. I even asked him if he had ever tried doing marathons.
He paused for a while, and his eyes looked deep, as if he was thinking deep. He said, “well…I’m not sure if you consider this as running a ‘marathon’, but I did run from this place (new york) to xxx (another location which required you to fly there by plane) in less than 5 minutes, because I discovered my mother was being disturbed in her sleep and I went to her help.”
I couldn’t responded to this answer from him for quite a moment… From the look of his face and his smile, I knew he was not joking with me.
WOW!
Ok, I wanted to be able to do that! I’ve done it before, but one day….I want to be able to do that AT WILL.
That – is another kind of fitness okay.
I fondly remembered this story until today, and it always brought me a smile whenever I thought about it. Like what the Chinese often said, there is always another mountain that is ‘higher’…
So whenever someone told me so-and-so can run so fast in xxxx distance, I would immediately be reminded of this story; I would remember my master and all the wonderful teachings and lessons that he had shared with me and taught me!
